John Clifford – Artists Statement

My photographic career started working for Los Angeles County, doing traditional photography. As an art student I soon realized there were many non-traditional applications for photography. So, I began experimenting… I believe that being an artist is about imagining new possibilities and creating new realities, not in literal representation.  Some of my experimenting is in the Gilke print collection at the Portland (Or.) Art Museum. My belief is that photo’s should be like our memories… not quite clear, leaving room for our imagination. Thus, I have rejected traditional forms of presentation in favor of a more painterly and creative representation.
