Scratchboard is a fine art medium in which the artist scrapes off a black top layer to reveal a white layer underneath.  Unlike most techniques, in which the artist adds mid-tones and shadows, when using scratchboard, the artist works by exposing highlights.  This yields highly detailed, precise, and evenly textured art work.

Students that are not familiar with scratchboard will learn basic techniques while creating a piece of artwork from references furnished by the teacher.  Learn how to create a variety of textures with the focus on values.

Students already familiar with working in scratchboard may bring their own reference or chose from some the instructor has that challenge them more than the beginner references.  Move to the next level in creating artwork that is striking and grabs attention.  They may also add color to their piece if they so desire and if time allows.
