Denise Markbreit, a native New Yorker is a recent transplant to Asheville. She got here as soon as she could after retiring as a NYC public school art teacher. After thousands of students in six schools over twenty seven years and working primarily at the elementary level the passion to educate and continue learning is strong. Always encouraging her students to see the beauty in the world and notice the small details and grace notes others might miss. In the last two years, Denise has given numerous adult workshops in printmaking using safer methods at School of Visual Arts, The National Art League and NYC Urban Sketchers.
About fifteen years ago the discovery of a then new product at a summer printmaking workshop of Akua ink- a soy based safer and printmaking solution, Denise’s interest in printmaking was reignited. Delving into safer practices opened a whole world of possibility- mokuhanga, mokulito, Gelli plates, mixed media prints. Until that time, book binding, altered books, stained glass, gardening and home sewing were Denise’s outlets. She discovered the world of urban sketching quite by accident and her love of drawing became an insatiable passion. One of the four founding members of New York City Urban Sketchers-the group has now grown to over 400, meeting twice a week to draw and discover the world, one drawing at a time.
In a few shorts months since arriving in beautiful Asheville, and with much gratitude, Denise has started her studio practice at Riverview Studios and become a member of the 310 Art gallery, the Asheville Printmakers group and attends the Plein Aire Painters when she can. Her work has been shown in numerous galleries and institutions across the country.
Denise holds a BFA from School of Visual Arts and an MST from Rochester Institute of Technology. The incomparable Bob Blackburn, Susan Rostow, Catherine Kernan and Dan Weldon have been invaluable and amazing teachers and artistic influences.
