Inclement make up days if the studio is closed are reserved for Sundays 3/9 and 3/19. Please reserve these dates in case we need to use them. Be sure you can attend all classes. We go by the Asheville and Buncombe county school closures. However for late starts we use their start times, and for our afternoon classes often the roads are fine by late morning, and class will be held.

This course is for aspiring artists with some basic experience in painting. Want to learn the best tubes of paint to buy and how to work with a limited palette? What does all the information on the paint tubes mean? What are the best uses for transparent and opaque pigments? Learn how to mix any color you want from six tubes of paint plus white, how to make black, how to make hundreds of greens with red, yellow and blue! And - how to save a lot of money using a good basic palette in red, yellow and blue.

This four-week course will be a guided journey into the mysteries of pigments and color:

  • Week one - the color wheel! Create your own reference to guide you in your painting journey!

  • Week two – how to mix a huge variety of secondary and neutral colors with a limited palette, lots of discussion and Q&A

  • Week three - using landscape subject, explore compositional perspective through use of intense colors, tints and shades you make, explore skies, green landscapes and more, all in small studies. What is the difference in indirect painting and direct painting methods to build your painting.

  • Week four – effective color combinations. Use your wheel and mix references as your guide to choosing color combinations, what do colors tell us about mood, feelings and story.

Bring all your paints to the first class (No sets please, avoid student grade. Check with instructor about brands and colors best for this class) and there will be either oils or acrylics in both mediums to use for what you are missing the first class. After the first class it is recommended you purchase any needed pigments you do not have. Always bring a notebook and writing implement, your questions and your inspirations. Paper, brushes and palettes will be available for the entire course included in the tuition. If you wish to use class paint supplies after the first class, bring an additional $15 cash to each class.

Fleta has spent years studying color and composition principles, including a Master in Studio art teaching with an emphasis on materials and color theory. To make the most of this course, some outside painting time is suggested but not required. Marvelous Mondays could be a good option for additional class time.
