Explore encaustic as a pure painting medium while creating a beautifully textured landscape! If you’ve been struggling to use color and encaustic paint in your mixed-media encaustic work or want an introduction to encaustic that’s painterly rather than collage-based, this may be the workshop for you. 

While we will be working from photos, students will be encouraged to simplify and slightly abstract their landscapes rather than trying to create photo-realistic copies. Encaustic is an expressive media with a mind of its own! We’ll be working WITH the medium rather than against it and playing to its strengths: rich color, luminous depth, and incredible texture. 

In this beginner-friendly workshop, you’ll learn: 

• Encaustic Safety

•  Easy ways to start your painting that set you up for success 

• How to build up & fuse your layers for maximum visual depth 

• How to achieve both smooth & textured surfaces

•  Tips & Tricks for using your brushes & controlling your paint

•  Working with the transparency and opacity of your paint

•  How to bring in detail and crisp lines

Bridget Benton is  the lead instructor in Encaustic Methods,  Nature Print, ecoprint and collage methods at 310 ART. In addition to local teaching, Bridget is a faculty member  of the international encaustic online encaustic masterclass, Painting with Fire, as well as the author of the award-winning “The Creative Conversation: ArtMaking as Playful Prayer”. Teaching credentials include the Creative Problem Solving Institute in Buffalo, NY; the Newport Visual Arts Center in Newport, OR; Art Unraveled in Phoenix, AZ; and Collage in Portland, OR. as well as the Nature Printing Society’s Annual Workshop where she served for several years as the event’s Educational Coordinator.
