CREATING MEANING IN MIXED MEDIA FOR BEGINNERS with Cynthia LIanes, MAR 21st (1pm to 5pm) ET 2026

$135.00

Saturday, March 21st - 1PM to 5PM- $135 - All basic materials supplied, but see below for suggestions!

This beginner-friendly class is all about creative exploration, play and discovery! The focus of this mixed media painting class is building a story through layers of materials, using them to carry meaning or intention. Each participant will choose a theme or a story that can be translated into a visual form. Some examples from past classes include a memory, traveling, re-imaging nature, or a fantastical garden. You can keep your story abstract - no need to illustrate!

Students can expect to learn a variety of mixed media techniques, including:

  • Tearing v.s cutting for organic shapes

  • Overlapping to create depth

  • Organizing and gluing papers as base, painting over, or around the collage

  • Using a limited color palette to unify varied materials

  • Letting one area be the focus

  • Repeating shapes and colors, softening edges with brush painting

  • Scraping paint with palette knives or cards

  • Pressing materials into wet paint for texture

  • Using mark making tools to suggest movement and emotion

  • Letting intuition guide decisions.

This is a fantastic class for all levels, especially beginners, to loosen up and embrace imperfection. Have fun, let your creative intuition take over, and let those happy accidents turn into abstract works of art!

This class seats 8 students. For any questions regarding our cancellation or transfer policy, please refer to the link in our navigation bar.
