Discover how Gouache differs from traditional transparent watercolor, and what makes it such a vibrant and illustrative medium!

In this workshop, students will choose a favorite animal, beloved pet, or even something as small as an insect as the inspiration for a whimsical gouache painting! Using bold colors, playful patterns, and expressive textures, each student will transform their subject into a unique work of art full of personality and charm.

The focus here is on creativity rather than realism, encouraging artists to experiment, exaggerate features, and have fun as they explore the versatility of gouache. The unique qualities of gouache are especially well-suited for fun and joyful illustrations, expressive animal portraits, and decorative designs. The rich matte surface enhances bright colors and exciting details without the glare of a glossy finish.

Originally a medical illustrator, Miriam Hughes works in gouache, watercolors, pens, collage and fibers and makes time to create art daily. She exhibits widely and teaches art in a number of topics.
