Explore the excitement and experimentation of painting with oils and cold wax medium!

Mark introduces students to a wonderful creative process and the variety of tools, tips, surfaces, and techniques used to make gorgeous abstract works of art. Learn to use lines, shapes, marks, drips, and textures to build up layers of paint to create fun, expressive and colorful paintings.

Loosen up and explore your creativity while enjoying this hands-on experience! There will be plenty of painting time, instructor demos, and one-on-one instruction as you bring your compositions to life. No experience required – perfect for beginners and experienced painters.

Mark Witzling is an accomplished award-winning abstract oil and cold wax painter. His art is in the collection of the Museum of Encaustic Art in Santa Fe and private collections in the US, Europe and Asia. His work appears in Cold Wax Medium: Techniques, Concepts, Conversations (Crowell & McLaughlin), and Artfolio: A Curated Collection of the World’s Most Exciting Artists.  He has participated in the artist residency program at Chateau Orquevaux (France) and is a two-time recipient of the Diderot Grant. He has judged numerous art fairs and currently serves on the Board of Hope Creates and the Delmar Maker District. Mark has served as Executive Director of Craft Alliance in St. Louis and holds degrees from Macalester College and Boston University.

REQUIRED SUPPLIES

  • Cold Wax Medium (Gamblin or Dorland’s) - 16 oz.

  • Oil Paints – a selection of oil paints with a variety of colors. 7-10 choices with a variety of warm and cool, opaque and transparent.

  • Arches Oil Paper – this will be our primary surface for the class. One pad of 12x16 paper. Available at retail art stores and online.

  • If desired, you may also bring small wood panels but they must be gessoed prior to class.

  • Gamsol (odorless mineral spirits) Small size 4.23 or 8 oz is fine

  • 4" soft rubber brayer (roller) - available at art stores and online

  • 6” Messemerister Silicon Bowl Scraper (squeegee) or similar (available on Amazon, art stores) or 6” SP Creates Squegees available here.

  • Paper towels, freezer paper or palette paper, 1” painters tape, vinyl gloves and a palette knife for mixing paint.

OPTIONAL OTHER SUPPLIES

  • An assortment of mark-making tools such as R&F Oil Sticks, wood skewers, old toothbrush, comb, stencils, tissue paper, wax paper, and any other items you may want to use. These are all optional – bring what you have. Instructor will have an assortment available.

  • Apron optional.
