Explore the diversity of oil paint and cold wax medium with abstract painter Cindy Walton !
Cold wax medium is wonderful for oil painters to experiment with by using non-traditional tools to achieve texture and finishes similar to Encaustic. With this medium, oil painters will explore new techniques, composition considerations when exploring abstraction, mixing colors, layering paint and textures, to create a rich surface that will give depth and meaning to your work.
Please note that this class is an oil based class. All painters are welcome but you must work in oil paint. Come equipped with your IDEAS - We will be working abstractly and any motifs you come with already in mind (symbols, ideas, photos, etc) will be stepping off points for your work

Cindy Walton is an acclaimed abstract painter and instructor with a long record of teaching and mentoring. She has a baccalaureate degree in art from Salem College, Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and a bachelor of fine arts degree from the University of North Carolina at Asheville. Cindy is an expert in abstraction and use of cold wax methods and is highly respected as a teacher of the medium.

Painting Panels
Surfaces that you are painting on must be primed (gessoed)
There are several brands of pre-gessoed panels. Ampersand brand while expensive is a good choice, gesso board or clay board . Dick Blick, Jerry's Artarama, Binders and Cheap Joes. Homemade panels are fine but they must have at least 3 coats of gesso and a cradle. Pre-made panels with or without gesso can be ordered online.
The cradle (the sides of the panel, like the edges of a canvas) comes is several sizes. If you are interested in attaching panels you would want the 2”deep cradle.
Flat panels may be used also but they will have to be framed when finished in order to protect the edges.
Sizes: You will be able to work on several at a time. If you work quickly you will want more than 4-6 panels or larger panels. Slower workers 4-6 will be fine. There are space constraints so not too big. A 12in by 12in square is a great option.
1 12”x16” pad of Arches Oil Paper- great for class and can be used along with panels
Assortment of oil paints, pigment sticks, and/or oil bars
Bring 10 or more of your favorite paints. I recommend opaque and transparent, dark and light, to give you a variety of options. There are lots of fun colors out there - metallics give wonderful effects. I recommend a good quality of paint such as Gamblin, Rembrandt etc. Quality does make a difference. I do not recommend water soluble oils.
