Learn the ins and outs of Charcoal drawing! Using Vine, Willow, Compressed, and Charcoal pencils students will test different mark-making techniques on a few different artworks in order to reveal shapes and textures.
Learn the benefits of wearing a latex-free glove whilst drawing to keep hands clean - your fingers are among the best tools for smearing and softening shadows! There’s even more - Heidi will guide students through the use of soft leather, smudge sticks, cotton swabs, and erasers. Take your learned techniques and tricks home with you to continue your Charcoal journey, and discover what makes this fantastic medium so expressive and addictive!

Heidi Hoffer is a Charcoal Artist and research enthusiast, with a passion for bringing her subjects to life. Inspired by Victorian daguerreotypes and live subject sittings, Heidi uses her own Rembrandt-inspired style of lighting to fill her drawings with life and personality. A signature member of the National Association of Women Artists and a member of the Portrait Society of America, Heidi brings her enthusiasm for both portraiture and teaching to 310 ART and Asheville’s River Arts District.
