This is a chance for students to take a deep dive into their encaustic practice with the support of Bridget Benton, an artist and instructor with 18 years of experience working in the medium. This workshop is by invitation only and is open to students who have taken at least one hands-on encaustic workshop with Bridget. Preference will be given to students who have taken additional classes and/or have a home studio practice.
The emphasis will be on advanced techniques and the pursuit of a personal vision. Bridget will be in touch prior to the class, and students will gather in a group with the first day to talk about the vision they have for their artwork. Based on the needs and interests of the group, Bridget will provide instruction, problem-solving, and support around:
Working large
Use of specialized tools like irons, wax writers, tjanting tools, and torches
Use of photography in encaustic
Layering or combining panels and the inclusion of dimensional objects
Working sculpturally or dimensionally
Working in a series
Working on flexible surfaces like paper or fabric
Creating and Building texture
Creating depth
Other topics and skills as needed, such as shellac burns or incising
This is an ideal opportunity for students looking to develop their practice, problem-solve, begin a body of work, and refine and expand their skills while having extended focused work time in a fully stocked and supportive environment.
Bridget will provide an assortment of smaller panels (8x8 and smaller) for experimentation, in addition to an assortment of encaustic paints, mixed media materials, collage materials, medium, and tools.
This class seats 6 students.
